About this site

Who this is for, where the explanations come from, and what this site deliberately will not tell you to do.

This is a reference site about Windows failures and computer networking. It is written for the person in front of a machine that will not do what it should — which includes technicians, but is not limited to them.

The approach

Explanation before instruction. An error code is a message, not a curse, and it usually names the component that failed and the stage it failed at. Pages here start there and work outward, because the reader who understands the mechanism can handle the variant this page did not anticipate.

What you will not find here

No registry cleaners, no driver updater utilities, no "optimisers". That category ranges from useless to actively harmful, it is what most troubleshooting sites are quietly paid to recommend, and this site carries no advertising or affiliate links of any kind — so there is nothing to steer you toward.

No steps presented without a reason. If a page tells you to run a command, it says what the command does and what its output means. Instructions you follow blind are how a recoverable problem becomes an unrecoverable one.

About the previous site

This domain hosted a Windows and networking blog from 2011 until a few years ago, written by someone else, and several of its pages were linked widely. Those addresses now redirect to pages covering the same problems. The content is new: much of the original described Windows 7 and server software that has been out of support for years. Nothing from the old site is reproduced, and no continuity with its author is claimed.

Corrections

Technical writing goes stale. If something here is wrong or describes behaviour that has since changed, it should be corrected rather than defended.
